Digital infrared photography differs from conventional photography as it uses light that can’t be seen by humans.
This is called infrared light and it comes in wavelengths from about 700 and 900 nanometres. This infrared light band is actually a thousand times wider than visible light, however we can’t see it.
Digital infrared photography can transform run-of-the-mill subjects into unforgettable photographs. Everyday scenes can take on a much more dramatic look if they’re viewed in infrared.
Infrared film has been used for years, but takes special equipment and processing to get to the final images. With digital infrared photography you can see the images immediately on the camera’s LCD screen.
The imaging sensors in digital cameras are designed to be sensitive to visible light and more. Some cameras have an infrared cut off filter that’s place in front of the chip. It’s used to stop infrared light from reaching it and can create colour balancing problems, but this filter can be removed.
You can test a digital camera to see if it can take infrared photos by using filters if you point the camera at a television remote control and take a photo or check the image on the camera’s LCD.
If you can see a point of light, then the camera can take digital infrared photos. However, you need the proper kind of filter. If the camera is capable of taking infrared images and has a black and white mode on it, you will be able to view the effect of infrared.
Most infrared filters can be relatively costly, but they’re effective at blocking visible light and transmitting electromagnetic wavelengths.
But if your digital camera isn’t capable of taking infrared photos you can have the camera converted to infrared-only operation. Many types of cameras can be converted for digital infrared photography by professional technicians.
After it’s been converted, it’ll become a black and white infrared camera only.
The camera will then only record reflected infrared radiation. An internal filter is placed in the camera which means you don’t need to put an infrared filter in the front of its lens.
Digital infrared photography is fun as the camera can capture some of the invisible spectrum. This allows you to view things that register just as heat and superb images can be created this way.
However, digital infrared photography is different than conventional methods as you need to disregard rules about lighting and the perfect time of day to take your photos.
To get an infrared glow, it’s better to take photos when there’s a good amount of sun shining on the scene, which means midday is a good time. So in fact, the best time of the day to engage in digital infrared photography is actually the worst time of day when taking regular photos.
