Food photography in packaging means trying to make the food look good and realistic at first sight. In this kind of photography, less props and minimal lighting is needed.

Do not believe it when they say that there is truth in advertising. Food photography will tell you otherwise. Almost similar with packaging, this type is also pre-determined. An artist provides for the layout which the photographer must clearly capture in camera to look just exactly as it is.

Unlike with packaging, in this type of food photography, the photographer is given a little freedom to work on the lighting and the props. What is important though is for the picture to convey the real idea of what the image is all about.


Editorial food photography is by far the most distinct of the three types. It empowers to making a beautiful image. Images that will make the onlookers say, “Great”, “Yummy”.

It’s like making people say “wow”. Here, lighting is considered as the biggest factor. Nicely styled foods looked even better with the right lighting.

As a whole, food photography is all about these three things:

1. Good lighting – Natural lighting works best. Have your food pictured near the window. It will bring out the food’s natural looks.

2. Right props – Less is more. Never clutter the setting with unwanted props. A spoon and a fork will do.

3. Style it – Enhance the food you want to capture by adding “extras”. Maybe a brush of vegetable oil or a sprig of thyme will work.
