A baby shower is a special occasion in most women’s lives as it gives them an opportunity to enjoy the company of their friends and family before the big event, which of course is the birth of their child. A shower can produce some great memories and images that can be cherished forever. There are no strict rules when it comes to baby shower photography since everybody has their own ideas. Some can be very creative while others will prefer to simply take photos of the event as it happens.
If you’d like to capture as much of the shower as possible it’s a good idea to start taking photos before it starts. This means you can take shots of the room, decorations, and food as well as the guests as they arrive. But before you start snapping away, make sure you have your camera equipment ready. Be sure to have extra batteries on hand as well as enough memory cards as you’ll be taking quite a few photos during the baby shower. A tripod can also come in handy as it’ll keep the camera nice and steady.
When taking your photos, try to capture people at eye level. If it’s a group shot, get the people to move close together. It’s usually a good idea to take spur of the moment photos instead of stopping people from what they do naturally and asking them to pose. For instance, when the expectant mother opens a gift try to capture the excited look on her face at the time. Getting her to pose with the gift in her hand five minutes later just isn’t the same.
Don’t be afraid to take as many photos as you feel are necessary. With digital cameras this is easy to do. You can just delete the images you don’t want to keep. If you’re taking photos of the event specifically for the mother, it’s always a good idea to ask her what type of images of the event she would like you to capture. She may want you to focus on her family or other specific people and/or events at the shower.
You could also hand disposable digital cameras to other guests to let them take photos of the baby shower too. This will result in a wide variety of photos of the event from different guests’ perspectives. You’ll usually get some pretty creative and interesting shots by doing this. When the part is over and all of the photos have been viewed you can save your favorites to a disc or create a scrapbook out of them.
The main thing with baby shower photography is to have fun and take the types of photos that will make you happy. Don’t worry about anybody else. The possibilities are endless and don’t be afraid to let the creative juices flow. It’s often a once-in-a-lifetime event for many people. If you’d like to capture all of the memories on camera you can either take the time to plan everything out in detail to make sure you don’t forget anything, or just go with the flow and let everything happen spontaneously, including the photography.
