Underwater photography reveals the secrets of under sea, which sometimes is ignored with normal human eye. 80% of earth’s life is under ocean and underwater photography helps to explore the glimpse of life under sea.

Many have a feeling that the subject in the underwater photography is only limited to sea life and sea habitats. But due to the technological developments in accessories and equipments, the subject in photography includes shipwrecks following, submerged submarines, cave systems, deep water landscapes etc.

Most scuba drivers favorite pass time is underwater photography. You need to know some basics on underwater photography and under water equipment to make your underwater photographs beautiful and awesome.

Many avid photographers who posses the interest of underwater photography do not know underwater swimming (scuba diving), so they prefer to take pictures from the submarines, as this is an easy way to click undersea life.

Under water photography equipments:

  • Amphibian camera or water proof camera: Canon, Nikon, Kodak, Sony, Olympus cameras are providing a wide range of underwater cameras with many diversifications such as, different mm, shutter speed, flash, contrast etc. Before buying an underwater camera, it is better to prefer digital underwater cameras than a film underwater camera.
  • The selection of digital camera helps you in many ways such as large memory space and deleting unwanted shots in case if they have any. Film underwater camera does not have this facility and in case if the film is completed, the replacement of film underwater is hard. With the selection of film underwater camera, you may even end up with an unsuccessful underwater photography trip.

The underwater camera is lighter and costly when compared to the normal cameras. If you do not have an underwater camera, you can prepare your own underwater camera with a normal digital camera by underwater camera enclosure.

  • Underwater camera lens: The primary problem faced by many underwater photographers is that they cannot capture the color and contrast in deep waters because of the lack of sunlight in deep waters [Selecting photographic lens].
  • The normal lens is not preferred for underwater photography. The famous lens for the underwater photography should have the aperture of 35/2.8. Refraction lens are preferred in underwater photography as it increases the magnification of the object.

  • External underwater camera flash (in case if the inbuilt flash is not enough): Most powerful lights penetration power in deep waters is only limited to 2 meters only. Here arises the use of underwater external flashes which are very much necessary for scuba drivers who penetrate deep into the sea for capturing the under sea life. The underwater flashes are produced by Olympus, lkelite, Sea&Sea etc. Strobes are also used as external flashes in underwater photography.

If you don’t have experience in underwater photography, it is advised not to experiment with a new underwater camera. Disposable underwater cameras are available for apprentice underwater photographers. If you are experimenting on underwater photography, it’s better to use a disposable underwater camera.
