Rainbow Photos

Get familiar with these things when clicking rainbows:

Choose proper backgrounds: To click a beautiful rainbow, you need a proper background. Choosing proper backgrounds will highlight the colors of the rainbow and show the rainbow in all colors it possesses.

Rainbows are not solid objects; rainbow is mixture of water and light. So, to click the images properly, the background should be strong without many colors. The most possible and probable backgrounds for the rainbow are the mountains, seas, thick or dark cloudy sky. If the background is highlighting the rainbow, try to change the angle view and take different photos.

Compositions in the frame: Rainbows are always beautiful, but the surrounding near the rainbow should also appear distinctively to highlight the rainbow. If you want to have a proper picture of the rainbow, it’s your sole responsibility to look after the composition in the frame. The frame should not have highlighting colors, which dominate the rainbow and its colors. The composition should be light with light colors. The important considerations in choosing the composition of rainbow frame are:

  • Positioning: What is the position of the rainbow in your picture frame? What is the other frame of the picture filled with? Rule of thirds work better when choosing a proper position in the frames.
  • Zoom: You should click the images with different focal lengths and different zooms. The wide angle lenses are very necessary in adding proper composition to the frames. Zooming with proper focal lengths can give you spectacular results.
  • Endpoints: This is also a very good composed shot. How about clicking the end of the rainbow? These compositions are not possible at all times, but when it’s possible, never miss the endpoint shot of the rainbow. Sometimes in a zoomed frame, you can capture both the endpoints of the rainbow. Go for this composition if the background supports.

Filters: Polarizing filter is the optimum filter used for clicking the rainbow images. If you have a polarizing filter, experiment with different rotating techniques when fixed to the camera lens. Rotations of the filters give different saturations of colors in the frame and different reflections in the shots. This filter also minimizes the contrast levels in the picture frame and highlights the rainbow.

Aperture: Different apertures show different effects on the rainbow. Changing the aperture may not show much impact on the rainbow but the change in the aperture changes the look of the complete shot. By choosing a smaller aperture, you can focus much on the rainbow and fill maximum picture frame with the rainbow. Smaller aperture gives you larger depth field.

Tripod: Your camera should be rock still while clicking landscape images. Tripod is very necessary for the nature photographs. Rainbow photography is not exceptional. As you are using a polarized filter and a smaller aperture, your shutter speed will be longer. So, a tripod is necessary to avoid blurs in the pictures.

These easy tips if followed can yield great photos of the rainbow and every one feel that there is a pot of gold hidden under your rainbow too.
