When you are clicking portrait images, you can observe that the backgrounds are soft, out of focus and unclear. The background becomes dull and unclear to highlight the subject, so get rid of distraction in the background.

Many aperture photographers, who set the camera in auto mode for portraits and click the images, face the shallow depth problem.
Auto mode does not create clear background in portrait modes and hence many apprentice photographers face this problem.
Portraits are pictures which should eliminate the background and focus on the subject only, but picture without background is awkward.
With small adjustments in the digital camera, you can overcome shallow depth in the portrait and get great portraits [Selecting best digital camera].
Improving shallow depth of field in portrait pictures:
Portrait mode: This mode supports clicking the portrait images and set the aperture according to the image. But, in some cases, this also loses the control over the shallow depth field.
Aperture priority mode: Aperture is the size of opening in the lens. Have you ever explored or seen different modes in the cameras? If you have seen, then you should have also observed the aperture priority mode in the camera.
Aperture mode is a way to control the depth of field in the images and minimize the distractions in background of the portrait.
As you minimize the aperture, the shallow depth field also gets minimized and blurry images are avoided. Take different shots with different aperture modes and you can understand how aperture controls the distractions in the portraits. The aperture should be set into small i.e. the aperture mode on the camera must be set in larger number.
Subject position: When you are clicking a portrait image, why do you need large background? Your portrait photo should have maximum portion of the subject and minimum portion of background.
Background is just nominal and sometimes you can even ignore it, but in some cases the background is very important and necessary. So, why don’t you stand at a fairy long distance where the background automatically goes out of screen. By doing this, you are covering the background and also minimizing the shallow depth field.
Zoom Lenses: Many use different lenses to improve the shallow depth of field. Use lens with different aperture and different focal lengths.
The main use of these zoom lenses is the picture frame will be completely filled with the subjects without the scope of background shallow depth of field. The more the aperture and focal length in zoom lenses, the more blurry will be background.
ISO: This also improves and supports smaller aperture and increase the sensitivity of the images. But by doing this, you can increase the noise and pixilation in the images, so take care about this aspect.
Lighting: Lighting your subject properly can minimize the depth of field. You can use an external flash or use any lighting source to compensate the shallow depth of field [Photography lighting techniques].
Shutter speed: By decreasing the shutter speed, the aperture comes down automatically and compensate for the shallow depth of field correction.
By following these techniques, you can correct the shallow depth of field in the pictures and correct the abruptions in the background.
