Taking the snaps of pets in attractive way is somewhat difficult task, which requires the suggestions or guidance from professional photographers who takes the photos of pets more often.
Guidance is not possible on each and every case due to several reasons, but by following some necessary tips, which are essential for taking the snaps of the pets will be certainly helpful for you to attain the better pictures of the pets [Photography techniques].
Tips that help to photograph pets:
1. Start with the personality of your pet: Before starting to photograph your pet,, know what is the specialty of your pet that makes it apart from the other animals. Make note of the personality of your pet and then capture the snaps.
For example, if your pet is always sleepy and lazy, then take it’s snap when it is sleeping or when it is around its bed, otherwise if your pet is inquisitive, always on the move, and hyperactive, then take a snap when it is jumping for the balls, racing or playing in the local garden or court yard.
2. Think regarding context: You have to consider variety of factors while taking the photograph of your pet. If you are a starter, select the place at which your pet feels more comfortable and at ease. Don’t forget to consider the emotion and familiarity of the location while taking the snaps.
3. Get closer while taking the snaps: Pets come in different sizes and shapes and mostly they will be smaller than the human beings. That’s why they will not appear clearly in the photos unless you put an effort to be close to them.
Taking pictures of your pets by getting close to them is not an easy task because pets move more often and they don’t stay in one angle or pose for long period of time, but good output will be seen if you make an effort to take the snaps of your pet by getting closer to it.
Coming to the clarity levels, good clarity will not be obtained in the picture if it is shot from long distance where as the picture which is taken in close up will have enough clarity.
One more important thing to consider while taking the snaps of your pet in close up is background. A nice blurry background will make your pet centre of attraction without any distractions.
4. Go to their level: While taking the snap, go down to the level of your pets so that you can attain eye to eye contact with them. The pictures which are taken by looking down and standing down to their level will not be that much attractive and they also make you to leave too far away from the subject.
By getting down to their subject, you will enter into their world and can get a glimpse of how their life looks like from your angle.
5. Blend up your framing: Just like human beings, pets look different from different angles. You can bring different perspectives to your shot by framing those pictures of different angles in variety of ways.
Mostly take the tightly cropped facial shots of your pets which focus much on some single features such as nose, eyes, whiskers, ears, etc. Also take some ¾ and full body shots of your pet in order to end up with a series of shots, which gives viewers a good impression on your pet.
6. Lighting: Lighting is the essential aspect which has to be controlled while taking the snaps. Good clarity will be attained in the picture if you take the snaps in good light source otherwise they don’t look that much attractive. Don’t use the flash while taking the snaps of the pet because it tends to distract them and in some cases it even frightens them [Important photography lighting techniques].
One more issue you will see while taking the snaps by keeping your flash on is: it creates spooky red eye problems in some pets. Natural light source is the best option to take the snaps of pets, but before taking the shot check whether that light is suitable to attain the better picture with good clarity levels.
If you are getting good pictures, continue; otherwise plan another schedule in which you will have good light source to take the snaps of the pets.
7. Include people: Including people is one of the best thing by which you can add context in your shot. If you want to do it, include the special people whom your pet likes most. The shots which are taken with the owner or other family members who interacts a lot with the pet makes the images incredibly special for many years.
8. Freeze the action: As told above, taking the snaps of the pets is a challenging task because most of them will be active and always tend to move. In such cases, the one and only key which can solve this problem is freezing their action by using the fast shutter speed.
9. Be playful: Generally the nature of the pets will be playful, so encourage them to stay in that mood only. Don’t order them to sit in one place or to stay in some position. Even though you take snaps in such passion, lack of expression can be seen. They don’t look natural.
Be playful with them while taking the snaps and also encourage them to stay in good mood by moving along with them.
