When you want to learn how to take wedding photos, the main thing you will want to focus on is your ability to prepare yourself. Preparation is king when it comes to taking quality wedding photos, so you need to make sure that you know how to prepare yourself before you go to the event. There will probably be other photographers at the same event, so you will need to make sure that you keep that in mind when you are making your own preparations.

The first thing you need to do when it comes to learning how to take wedding photos is to think about what kind of camera you are going to use to get the job done. Some people just take pictures with their camera phone at a wedding, while others will bring an old camera they have for the occasion. There is no need to buy a new camera if this is going to be a onetime thing, so don’t think that you need to pay a lot of money for a camera just because you want to act like a professional photographer for the day.

You should take a long time to figure out what you are going to do with the wedding pictures before the wedding actually takes place, and some estimate that you should start planning the pictures two months before the wedding actually takes place.

You can judge for yourself how long you will want to plan in advance, so make sure you make a solid decision and give yourself plenty of time to prepare. The most important thing to remember is that you need to have time to get everything together and plan everything out in advance.

How to take wedding photos that will last

Many people want to learn how to take wedding photos a few days before the wedding, but you really need to get started before that if you want to take quality photos. Think about what kind of people are involved in the wedding because you will need to take pictures that personify what these people are all about. You should also think about what kind of pictures you want to take and whether or not you want serious or casual photos.

Most people like to put together a combination of fun and serious photos because that really personifies what the day is all about. These people are definitely going to have fun on their wedding day, but they also understand how this day is a milestone achievement in the grand scheme of things. You will want to make sure that you have planned out how you are going to get both types of pictures done before the day is over.

Think about a wonderful backdrop

The backdrop actually plays a huge role in the end product when everything is said to be done, so that is definitely something you will want to think about when you are planning everything. If you want to know how to take wedding photos then you really just need to do your own research and practice before the big day.

Aside from your rings, your wedding photos will outlast all the other tangible memories of your wedding day. Old daguerreotypes and sepia-toned prints from bygone weddings take pride of place in family photo albums, giving great-grandkids a glimpse of when their ancestors were a happy young couple themselves. Your own wedding photo albums could become a future generation’s family heirlooms, so make the most of them.

1. Stick to the Classics

Part of the charm of vintage wedding photos is their sense of place and time. Intricate Victorian lace on the bride’s veil or dramatic 1920s-era kohl-rimmed eyes give you an idea of when the wedding happened without needing to look at the back of the photo for a date.

Other brides opted for the latest fads in their hair and makeup. A towering beehive hairdo, white lipstick and inch-long false eyelashes epitomized late 1960s style, but the look didn’t flatter everyone. While all brides look gorgeous on their wedding day, the ones who paid more attention to fashion than fads look just as beautiful a year, a decade or a century later. Choose a hair and makeup that flatters you, not what magazines suggest you should wear.

2. Sparkle Strategically

Use shimmering makeup sparingly for photographs. The light from flash photography can hit shimmer particles strangely, giving you a wet shine rather than a subtle dewy glow. Confine sparkle to a few carefully chosen spots: the center of your lower lip, the inner corner of your eyelids, the outermost edge of your cheekbones and depending on the shape of your eyes, just below your brows. You’ll have enough sparkle on your wedding day that you won’t need much help from cosmetics.

3. Consider a Smaller Bouquet

Flowers photograph beautifully in a close-up, but a large and busy bouquet will take attention away from your lovely face and dress. If your bouquet is a dramatic cascade of colorful flowers, ask the photographer to take a few shots with your bouquet and a few with a single lily or rose. You’ll have a photographic record of your magnificent bouquet, but you’ll also have unobstructed views of your equally magnificent gown.

4. Know Your Best Poses

The biggest difference between a handful of pretty good wedding pictures and wedding photo albums so gorgeous that you still want to show them off years after the ceremony is posing. Celebrities always know how to hit their mark, stand at the most flattering angle and smile just enough. They aren’t born knowing these tricks, though; they practice. Run through some practice sessions yourself with a friend as your photographer. You’ll soon discover your best angles and can strike a pose like a model on your wedding day.

A wedding is still usually one of the happiest days in a married couple’s lives. It’s something that you want captured professionally so you can cherish the memories and images forever.

There are many excellent wedding photographers to choose from, but there are also a few things you should be aware of when selecting one.

While most people assume getting a list of references from a possible wedding photographer, it’s actually not much more than a waste of time.

You’re never going to have a photographer give you bad references, so there’s not really much point to this process. All references are going to be good ones and will come from real or non-existent clients.

You should check a photographer’s quality not quantity. Anybody can take hundreds of shots at a wedding, but how many of them are good ones? Make sure you look at a wedding photographer’s samples to see what the percentage of quality images are.

You should try and stay away from photographers that don’t have the proper experience. It may cost you less to hire somebody who’s just bought their first camera, but how good will the work be?

It’s true that all photographers need to start somewhere to get experience, but photographers can get this by working as assistants and tasking classes. There’s no substitute for experience when hoping to get good wedding photos.

If the wedding photographer has poor-quality equipment it should set off alarm bells. A photographer should have a high-quality lens for their primary use. If the photographer is using an old and battered camera, make sure you see some samples of their work.

The photographer should have professional habits and be courteous. They should scout the sites and arrive in plenty of time will all equipment ready to work. You can’t afford disorganization as there’s usually just one chance to get your wedding day photographed right.

If you attend a wedding these days there’s a good chance that you’ll find a disposable wedding camera on your table at the reception.

The basic idea for the cameras is for the guests to take their own photographs throughout the proceedings and celebrations and then hand them in art the end of the night.

This results in hundreds of images from the party that the bride and groom can keep forever as a way to commemorate their special day.

These disposable models were originally film cameras, but you can now get digital ones as well.

The happy couple can’t be everywhere during the reception and party, so this method is a great way for them to enjoy the things they missed and to see how much fun their guests had. The cameras offer a great alternative to the often serious official photos of their wedding day.

The cameras are quite light and small and are very simple to operate as they’re basic point-and-shoot models. They come with a built-in flash and many types also have an auto-focusing lens. The easier to operate the better, especially if there’s an open bar at the reception.

Some of the disposable digital cameras allow you to set the ISO speed and they come with an assortment of exposure numbers. The married couple can take the cameras and have the images transferred to discs or other types of digital storage media.

The cameras are relatively inexpensive and you should be able to find them for about $20. It’s actually a pretty small price to pay for a lifetime of everlasting memories.

You should also be able to find the disposable models specifically designed for weddings as they’ll come designed and decorated in wedding motifs. If you’re really adventurous, you can also get underwater models for underwater weddings.

A wedding dress and a swimming pool? The majority of the brides would think about a reception organized near a pool, but there are some really talented people who could make more of this idea.

You might have heard about Jonathan Ryan, who is one of the most well known photographers of our days.

He lives in the southern part of England and he is best known for the underwater bridal pictures and portraits that he makes. The idea that he came up with is a really innovative one.

Just imagine a beautiful wedding dress in weightless circumstances, flowing in water. This is a sight that no one could ever forget or reproduce.

Naturally it isn’t that simple to create the right circumstances. It takes a lot of planning, and most importantly, he needs really good equipment to make all this become reality.

It is said that he uses a Nikon D3S, Nikon SB-800 and Ewa-Marine Underwater Housing for the shots.

The whole process is more than just walking around in a sunny day and taking some pictures. This is why usually after shooting he gets really tired. Of course, the shootings take hours, even in case he has a really good model to work with.

At some point he has asked one the most outstanding bridal wear company to offer a dress for the shooting. At first the company feared that the water would ruin the dress.

After the photos have been taken the company realized that it was worth it even if the dress was useless afterwards, because the pictures were phenomenal.

This kind of photography gives a whole new meaning to bridal pictures, and it might become something that makes every bride think about the possibilities that she has.

Naturally the chances are very small that you would get the chance to take such photos with your every day camera.

If you’ve been invited to a wedding it’s a good opportunity to practice your photography skills. If you’re going to be attending anyway, why not take your camera along and get in a few hundred shots while you’re there?

As well as being a good opportunity to practice, you can also add the photos to your portfolio for exposure and you could also present the happily married couple with the images as a gift, especially if they’re pretty creative.

The best way to do this is to make a plan and figure out where you’re going to be shooting from and what type of photos you’d like to take.

You have a lot of freedom here because the couple will also have an official photographer taking photos. This means you can let your imagination run a little wild.

Scouting out the wedding venue and the location of after-wedding shots and the reception area is definitely a good idea. This will help you prepare for the event as you’ll have a feel for the lighting conditions.

You can ask the couple if you can be seated near the front at both the ceremony and reception to get some images without the need of a zoom lens.

When it comes to the reception, it’s a good idea to be one of the first to arrive and take photos of people as they enter. When the lights do down later on, you could use a low-light zoom lens to take photos from your table.

Make sure you place your camera in a safe place if you plan on enjoying the part after you’ve taken your shots. Just because you’re taking shots of the wedding doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy yourself too.

Of course, if you have a date for the wedding, you may want to let them know that you plan on taking photos during the day and part of the night. However, you can still get the shots you need and enjoy the company of your date at the same time.

When Jim was attending the Art school, he had a bit of an argument with one of his teachers on the topic of what kind of film would be proper for a wedding photo. The teacher asked him then why in the world would he want to shoot a wedding, for weddings are the most common things a photographer should capture.

Many photographers probably were in the same position as Jim Garner. When Jim became a professional photographer working for Seattle.com, taking wedding pictures, he was already detached from his newspaper job. In 1999 he and his wife, Katarina – the person who stood by him through his daring challenge, became interested in wedding photography.

It took him 10 years to make a name in Seattle, being famous for the photographic albums which were telling stories quite differently than his competition. An example would be the way Jim Garner started a wedding tale filled with important events. This way opening the champagne, the limo story and the church ceremony ending became significant moments captured to compliment the couple’s memories.

In 2007, Jim Garner won the award for the album of the year offered by the WPPI association and this brought to his portfolio the shots of high society brides and grooms. His genius became trendy and remained that way.

Jim’s approach gets in touch with several elements. Specific for him is an editorial style with a sense of fashion, a distinctive appeal for color and texture and a relaxing attitude mixed with a passion for capturing the best in every moment.

The post processing made Jim Garner be even more original. His work is placed in an artistic book-like presentation focused of the details that made the wedding unique.

For Jim, the brides are a source of light, a smile that tells a story. The grooms are more than men in love shadowed by their amazing halves. The art of his photography focuses on capturing the many nuances of their love.

The art of Jim Garner is about understanding why the two have come together and sending the message of their happiest moment the way they would want to remember it after many years.

What makes Jim Garner different from the other wedding photographs? His daring mission is of not staying into the patterns. Whether it is vintage, classy, retro or pop, the style he uses in the wedding photos is simply more than capturing happy moments.

Jim does not capture happiness, he captures…life.

There are several elements that make up contemporary wedding photography, but creativity should be one of the main ones. However, it’s important that the wedding photographer and the couple are on the same page when it comes to the type of photos expected.

This is why it’s very important to meet with the photographer so everything is fully understood before the wedding. You can also suggest innovative and exciting locations where you want photos to be taken and what types of poses.

Some people compare contemporary wedding photography to fine dining as it features delicate flavours and nothing too exaggerated. But like fine dining, the main component is the ingredients.

In contemporary wedding photography these are lighting, composition, lens choice, and preparation.

Lighting is basically the most prominent part of the image as it will make or break a shot.

The lighting has to be suitable for the situation. If you know how to evaluate and observe light you should be able to take good shots in just about any type of lighting conditions.

Composition also has to be considered and if you understand how to illustrate positive and negative space you should be able to get some good shots, You can always crop photos afterwards too, so it’s a good idea not to delete any of them until they can all be viewed by the bride and groom as they might be able to find a fresh perspective in the photos.

Make sure you have the appropriate lenses for taking wedding photos. The subjects should fill the frame. If there’s no flash allowed, you may need to use a pretty fast lens if the lighting is low.

Keep your eye out for people’s expressions and emotions as they can make some great shots. You may be able to anticipate some good times to shoot the couple if you attend the wedding rehearsal.

When it comes to the reception, take some candid shots of people enjoying themselves and having fun. After all, a wedding is supposed to be a happy occasion, so you don’t want to end up with dozens of dark shots of sombre people.

Contemporary wedding photography can open the doors to creativity and the best time to try it out would be the reception. Make sure there’s a list of people and/or instances that need to be photographed so nobody is left out. If you take the photographs that are expected of you, there will then be ample opportunity to experiment a little.

Remember, each wedding is unique, and this should reflect in the price of having them photographed.

Budget photographers are the least expensive with luxury photographers costing the most. You need decide how long you want to hire a photographer and what you’d like included, such as online photos or hard-covered albums, CDs or DVDs etc.

Wedding photography prices will go higher and higher if you keep requiring more from the photographer. Most photographers will make sure they have assistants to help out if the wedding is large. However, this could end up costing a bit more. Special albums and additional photos, such as engagement photos could also add to the price.

You may be able to keep wedding photography prices low by paying part or all of the costs up front, but be careful when doing this as it could lead to nightmares later if there’s a disagreement with you and the photographer.

You might also get a break in price if the wedding isn’t held on a weekend.

There are several ways to find a good photographer. You can check out various photography and wedding-related websites and look through magazines and classifieds.

Many websites specialize in wedding coverage and you can browse through a list of photographers by the region you live in and/or by the price.

It’s a good idea to always check a photographer’s references from couples who have hired them before. They will be able you give you some insight on the person’s professionalism and photography skills. You can also visit the Better Business Bureau in some countries to see if any photography businesses have had complaints lodged against them.

When you decide on a wedding photographer, make sure there’s a contract between you and them that specifically spells out the costs and the requirements that need to be fulfilled.

It’s a good idea to make a checklist for everything you want covered at the wedding and go over it point by point with the photographer. The person should also attend the rehearsal so they know what to expect.

Wedding photography prices don’t have to be sky high, so take the time do little research before settling on a photographer.

It’s a day to share with loved ones and to remember for the rest of their lives.

To make sure your wedding photography goes smoothly and ends up with some great shots there are a few things that may help your photographer out.

1. Make a list

Ask the couple to create a list of photos they’d like, with specific people in them. For instance, they may have certain relatives and friends they’d like to have shots of.

2. Find a coordinator

Have somebody direct the guests for the photo shoot at the reception. They can help coordinate things and keep them moving when it’s time to take photos of specific people. This is one of the most important wedding photography tips.

3. Scout locations

Make sure you check out the locations you’ll be shooting from ahead of time. It’s a good idea to know exactly where to shoot from and you can take a few test shots.

4. Be prepared

Another important aspect of wedding photography tips is to be well prepared because things may go wrong on the big day.

Make sure you have a backup plan if the weather’s bad and be sure you have spare batteries and memory cards. It’s a good idea to attend the wedding rehearsal too. It’s also a good idea to take a spare camera along and have a different size lens on it.

5. Know what to deliver

Make sure you know what the couple is expecting when it comes to style and theme, etc. Ask how many photos they’d like to have.

6. Remember the small details

Take shots of the fine details such as the wedding rings, shoes, dresses, table settings, flowers, and menus.

7. Have an assistant

You might want to get some help with an assistant photographer to make sure you can fully cover the wedding.

8- Be bold

Don’t be shy. When it comes to wedding photography tips, you need to keep in mind to be a bit bold and not afraid to take certain shots or ask people to pose for them to keep things moving.

9. Use diffused light

The light is quite low in a lot of churches, so if you can use diffused light or bounce a flash if it’s allowed, it will be a big help.

You can also use a flash diffuser as it will soften the light. If flash isn’t allowed, you’ll need a fast lens with a wide aperture and might have to boost the ISO setting.

10. Shoot in RAW

It’s a good idea to shoot in RAW mode as you can alter exposure and white balance afterwards. This point of the wedding photography tips has to remembered for sure.

11. Reception slide show

Digital photography allows you to show the photos immediately so it’s a good idea to create a slide show during the reception for guests to see.

12. Don’t delete

One of the most important wedding photography tips is that when taking wedding photos, don’t delete any of them as you go along as you might end up getting rid of some interesting shots.

You can always crop photos after wards and edit them on a digital program.

13. Change the perspective

Be creative and take a few wedding photography shots from different angles and heights, such as from above, below and at wide angles.

14. Take a group shot

If possible, try and get a group shot of all guests at once. This can usually be done from high above as you can capture everybody’s face in it.

15. Shoot everything

Last but not the least of wedding photography tips is that if anything should go wrong on the wedding day, take the photos as these could end up being some of the most memorable shots of the wedding and can add some fun to the collection.
