Everyone likes the idea of taking pictures of beautiful sceneries and special occasions, but a great deal of creativity can also be used on various macro photography ideas. Macro photography is used when you want to take a closeup picture of something that you find interesting. Most people look to nature for these kinds of pictures, and plenty of people have taken photos of bugs, plants and fruits in the past.

The most creative macro photography ideas are going to be the ones that come from taking pictures or seemingly normal objects that you may even find around the house. Photography is all about releasing your creativity and finding beauty in things that you normally would not even consider for a photograph. The only way you are going to be able to find something unique is when you are willing to try something that no one else seems to want to try.

Instead of following the normal procedure with your photography, you should try to find something that no one else has photographed before.

This is obviously something that is very hard to do, but you should at least break away from the normal routine and find something that you find interesting on your own.

As long as you are thinking outside of the box and trying to come up with something unique, you should be able to create some pieces of art with your photography that you can be very proud of.

Where to start with your macro photography ideas

You should keep things simple when you first begin thinking of macro photography ideas because sometimes the greatest things are found in the most normal places. Start looking around your house for items that would be good for a closeup shot because many items around the home actually work well for these kinds of photos. People enjoy photos of things they can relate to, so you can have a good impact on your viewers if you are taking pictures of things that they are used to seeing in their everyday lives.

The kitchen is always a great place to start for these kinds of photos because there are so many small items in there that are worth of a photo. Fruits and vegetables are something that everyone has photographed before, so perhaps you should try to find something interesting about another type of food. You could even take a look at your cutlery and find something interesting about the setup of the silverware in your home.

Get creative with your photo ideas

Instead of trying to find all of your macro photography ideas online, you should try coming up with a few ideas of your own. The whole point of taking up a hobby such as photography is to find your creative spirit and along it to dictate what you will do next. Anyone who is looking for the perfect object to photograph will not find it online because someone else has undoubtedly already used that idea at some point in the past.

When taking sports shots with an SLR camera you’ll need to realize there are three important settings to manipulate if you want to capture clear, crisp images. These are the ISO, the shutter speed and the aperture.

Basically, if you change one of these settings you’ll affect the three of them. If you’re taking shots outside and there’s plenty of light, it’s better to use a low ISO setting for less grainy photos. If you set the aperture wide open, (the lowest number on the F-stop) you can then try to set the shutter speed faster since the camera will be letting in the most light possible.

If you don’t have much light to work with you can then try setting the ISO to a higher number. As long as you’re getting enough light you should be able to set the shutter speed for sports shots at a minimum of 1/500th of a second.

You may want to experiment and go faster or even slower until you can freeze the action to your satisfaction. If there isn’t much light, you might have to settle for about 1/250th of a second.

With the aperture being open, the depth of field will be shallower and this will let you focus on the athletes while the people and objects in the background won’t be in focus to distract your viewer. A good sports action photo needs to be in sharp focus.

With athletes that are constantly moving you should use the continuous focusing option on your digital camera. If your camera has a back-button focusing method this is recommended.

With most sports shots, you won’t have a chance to set up a tripod. However, if you have the time and the room, go for it. If you’re holding the camera in your hands you’ll need to keep it as steady as possible, especially considering the fast shutter speed you’re using. If your camera lens has an image-stabilizing option you should definitely employ it.

Knowing the sport and anticipating the plays will enable you to capture good action shots since you’ll know where to focus on the playing field/arena etc. Other than that you really just have to experiment and practice. Take as many photos as you can since you might get the perfect shot somewhere during the event.

If you have the chance you should also move around. It doesn’t matter how good or big your lens is, the best images are typically taken from close to mid-range. Also different angles and perspectives can be utilized by moving your position. Remember, you can take both vertical and horizontal photos.

While everyone has their own preferences, it’s generally considered that some of the better sports photos capture the emotion on people’s faces, either the players’and/or fans’, or they include the ball or puck etc.

If the picture lets the viewer know what’s happening, you’ve got most of the battle won. When you get home you can always improve the shots by cropping them tightly on a photo-editing program. However, some photos will benefit from the inclusion of negative space. You can also sharpen some of the shots if they seem to be slightly out of focus.

Don’t be afraid to keep shooting while at a sports event. You may end up taking hundreds of photos and only one in 10 might be considered a good one. Don’t let this get you down though as this is often the norm in sports photography, even with professional photographers.

Taking photos of pets and animals can result in some extraordinary images, especially when it comes to kittens. For some reason, these cute and playful animals are very photogenic and can pull off some amazing poses and facial expressions.

Cats definitely have a mind of their own when they grow older, but most kittens are intrigued by the same things and are just naturally playful, energetic, curious, and mischievous. If you have a kitten you will know your pet well and will know when to capture it on camera.

You don’t really need to be an expert with your camera to get some good shots, knowing your kitten’s personality actually means more since you’ll know how to get it to react and when to take the pictures.

When taking the photos it’s a good idea to get down to the same level as the kitten.

In addition, try to take the photos without using your camera’s flash unit since it could harm the cat’s eyes. If you do have to use the flash, make sure your pet isn’t looking straight into the camera.

The best photos are the ones that aren’t posed, but are spontaneous.

When the animals are awake they’re usually pretty active and all you really need to do is keep your eye on them for several minutes to see what they get up to. It’s usually something pretty interesting as they just naturally keep themselves entertained.

Following a kitten around should give you plenty of opportunities to capture some pretty interesting shots. If you place the kitten in new surroundings it will probably become naturally curious and start to check things out. However, if it doesn’t or is unsure of its surroundings you can usually always get your pet to react by tossing it a toy or a ball or waving a piece of string in front of it. A cat’s natural instinct is to wave its paws at a moving object or to chase it over the room.

There are a few tricks you can try as well when taking the photos. For instance, if you have more than one kitten you could rub a treat behind the ears of one of them. The other kitten may sense this and the odds of it licking its little buddy’s ears are pretty good.

Having the kitten interact with small children can also result in some excellent photos. If you’d like your pet to settle down in a specific area, remember kittens like the warmth and you could place a hot water bottle underneath a blanket to get it to stay in one place.

Using the sequence-shot setting on your digital camera is a good way to capture an image. If the kitten is jumping at an object and you take multiple shots in a row there’s a good chance you’ll catch the cat in mid-jump or midair.

It doesn’t always matter if the image captures the whole kitten. Often, its face and eyes are just needed, even if its eyes are closed. Try to use a contrasting background. If your kitty is black then it will stand out more in front of a light background.

But while kittens are usually pretty boisterous, you can also get some wonderful shots when they’re sleepy or resting. These images can be peaceful, calm, and very tranquil. A dreaming kitten often makes for a cute and adorable photo.

The possibilities when taking photos of your pet kitten are basically endless. There’s usually never a dull moment when a kitten’s around. Just remember if your pet’s pretty active you may have to adjust your digital camera settings to make sure you can capture a fast-moving object. You want to make sure that you end up with a sharp and crisp photo instead of blurry ball of fur.

Understandably, one of the most popular angles for taking photos is from a photographer’s standing position. This is because it’s generally the most comfortable and is ideal for taking landscape shots and other general photos. However, it’s not always the best angle for capturing exciting images.

If you’d like to add a bit more excitement to your shots you may want to consider taking them from a low angle. In fact, if you lie down on the ground when taking landscape photographs, you’ll really be able to capture the detail of the foreground.

Taking the photos from a bottom or low angle will give and the viewer a different and fresher perspective of situations and scenes.

This will provide a different outlook on locations, landscapes, and monuments etc.

Low-angle photography is also pretty effective when shooting parties and social events. It’s a good vantage point to capture things such as motion blur of performers, crowds, and people dancing etc.

This is an ideal way to add excitement to your shots.

Another good occasion for taking low-angle shots is when taking photos of children when they’re playing as you’ll then be down to their eye level. Even getting below eye level will result in some good shots since taking photos of them from your standing position often results in somewhat awkward angles and everything appears to be a head-on shot. Low-angle shots will enable you to capture the children’s facial expressions and their wide-eyed innocence.

However, with most types of digital SLR and point-and-shoot cameras it’s hard to get a low-angle perspective when actually taking the photos because you can’t usually see the scene through its LCD screen or viewfinder. But some cameras now have swirl or tilt LCD screens. These enable you to view the scene if you turn or twist the camera’s LCD screen while it’s touching the ground. Just make sure you have some type of protective sheet or cover with you if the ground’s dirty.

Another useful camera accessory when taking low-angle shots is a small and sturdy tripod that fits on a table top. You can usually find ones that are about six inches in height. These allow you to capture images in low-light conditions by keeping the camera still. A time-release controller or remote control can also come in hand after you’ve mounted the camera to the small tripod. This will allow you to take the shots from a comfortable position.

Of course, there will be some instances when taking low-angle shots just won’t be possible. This usually happens in street and travel photography and in places where there are crowds of people, etc. However, whenever you get a chance and the time to try it out, it’s something that’s well worth experimenting with. You’ll soon realize which situations make for interesting low-angle images and which ones don’t.

When taking low-angle shots, be careful with your digital camera and try to keep it away from dusty and dirty surfaces if at all possible. Make sure the conditions are right before you risk your camera and/or your body on the ground.

The only time humans get the chance to take photos from thousands of feet above the earth is when they’re on airplanes or hot-air balloons etc. You can get some amazing images from those heights as everything is seen in a different perspective.

Taking photos from an airplane can be easily done, but there are a few things to keep in mind to get better shots.

You’ll have to take the photos out of the plane’s window. However, a plane can often be unsteady and it usually vibrates.

If you place the camera against the window there’s a good chance your camera will be unsteady, so try and hold it steady and don’t place it directly up against the window.

Make sure your flash is turned off since it won’t be of any use anyway and it can cause reflections in the window. If you’d like to cut down on any natural glare or reflections you can use a lens hood if your camera lens allows for one.

If you can’t fit a hood on it, then you can cup your hand around the lens to cut down on the sun and reflections.

You might want to take the shots as early in the flight as possible in case the windows become cloudy or condensed from the outside weather. You should also use manual focus as the auto feature may not work as well since it might not know what you’re trying to focus on.

If you know the route your plane is taking you’ll have a good idea of what you’ll be flying over and approximately when. You can get some excellent views when the aircraft is turning or banking as well as when it just takes off and is landing.

Keep your eyes open for the unexpected. You may be able to capture some amazing cloud formations, bolts of lightning, the setting or rising sun, other airplanes, and dramatic changes in landscapes etc.

Seeing the world from above can provide you with some amazing sights and it’s well worth taking your camera with you on your next flight.

Most of the cameras have along the base settings a feature able to give you a hand in creating panoramic images. Usually this setting has several functions. First of them is the one showing you the picture you just took and only then moving to the visualization of what you plan to shoot.

This helps you align the pictures so you know how to overlay them. Setting the camera for only one exposure so that it does not change between the pictures you take is a good idea. This helps you create a special kind of luminosity inside your pictures which will allow you to post-process them easily in case you don’t want to use a specific post-processing software feature.

The overlay is one of the most important aspects of panoramic photos. A single overlay mistake can destroy the whole photo taken from a wide angle.

Nobody wants a picture of the Grand Canyon with a white line in the middle caused by the absence of a correct overlay. The correct overlay for this type of picture is 30% but most of the professional photographers use the average 15%.

The right way to go is to experiment with your camera until you find the right overexposure spot. Increasing its value can diminish a too high color intensity the camera software will be forced to create in order to cover all the sides and corners of the picture.

Keeping the same level in all the shots becomes extremely important as you combine several images. You must not stress on this if you have only 4 or 5 photos to work with. However, if the number of photos increases to 40, keeping the level constant is a very important factor. Consider that the camera lens, no matter how performing, is made of curved glass and if you keep the level constant you will obtain exactly the same angle.

If you direct the camera 45 degrees lower, in the photo will appear distant objects like the mountains from the background which will be captured from a narrower angle than the main subject of the photo.

When taking only one shot it will not be a problem. But in the case of a panoramic picture this will create an effect impossible to repair. This happens because as you capture the scene from left to right you no longer have a wide exposure. Even more you may get distortional curved images created by the angle the light used to enter the digital camera.

Black and white photography may not be as simple as one may think. When trying to click a black and white photograph, the photographer has to consider the various colors in the composition and how they will turn out in the various tones of grey.

When using black and white film the photographer needs to consider what color filters to use, to be able to bring out the best features of his composition.

It is essential to choose the right filters to be able to bring out the artistic message and not end up with a washed out or dark picture that holds no one’s interest.

Filters are used to block out specific colors and to let only the colors we need to come through the lens. Filters are named after the colors that they allow to pass rather than the ones they block.

The appropriate filter can help determine the texture, contrast and tonal character. The general rule says that the color of the filter chosen should be directly opposite, in the color wheel, to the color of the subject.

This will help bring out the perfect contrast and will enhance the subject’s image.

With the progress of digital photography, it is quite normal to click a photograph in color and then convert it into a black and white picture. The filter rules apply here to, only the software makes it easier (or trickier) to get the picture of your choice with the help of a few adjustments.

The post processing software has different features. Some allow you total control over the color adjustments and some will let you make only a few adjustments and decide about the rest for themselves. The choice of the software would depend a lot on the results you will get.

The basic idea is to be able to get the perfect grayscale. This is achieved by adjusting the three primary colors with the help of a channel mixer.

You will also need to adjust hues and de-saturate colors to come up with the perfect black and white picture that does justice to your message.

If you’re an avid birdwatcher or just enjoy taking photos of colourful and interesting species, chances are you won’t have to travel much further than your back yard. Most countries around the world have some fascinating birds that can often be seen in local neighborhoods where they can find food and water.

Just about any time of the year is good for capturing good shots of bird. It really depends on where you live and what the migration habits of the birds are. But you can often find just as many in the winter as you can in the summer.

As the saying goes, “The early bird catches the worm.” This means the best time of the day to get some good photos could be pretty early in the morning when most birds are pretty active.

This is also a good time for lighting as the sun isn’t at its strongest, making for pretty even light. A couple of hours before sunset can also be a good time.

If the birds are in your backyard you don’t really need any special lenses. Zooming in a little bit will often help get better photos though. Unless you’ve got really steady hands you should probably be using a tripod to keep the camera stabilized.

You might also want to set the camera up close to a feeder and use a remote control to set off the shutter.

If you’re focusing on one area, such as a feeder or a birdbath, you can pre-focus the camera at that location. If you’re holding the camera then manual focusing is a good option.

If you shoot in the aperture priority mode you’ll be able to control the depth of field. If you’re taking photos of birds in flight then the manual focus is definitely the best and you should set the shutter speed.

As long as you have a good view you can even get some great shots of visiting birds from inside the house. You may want to set up a feeder close to a window to attract some feathered friends. You shouldn’t have a problem as long as the glass is clean and you don’t use a flash. Using a polarizer may help could down on any glare.

Some of the most fascinating photographs that show a tremendous amount of detail are of insects. A good, clear and crisp photo of something like a fly or spider can often amaze viewers as you can literally see every hair on the insect’s body as well as other details you’d never be able to see with the naked eye.

You also have a lot of choice when it comes to subject matter as about three-quarters of living creatures on the earth are insects.

You can get some great shots with close-up filters and macro lenses, but you can also get some excellent ones with a regular point-and-shoot or DSLR camera.

The most important thing is to make sure the image is as sharp as possible.

You may want to use the auto focus mode when taking the shots as even the slightest movement of your hand can affect the image’s sharpness and depth of field.

Once the insect’s in focus take the photo as quick as you can just in case it moves. You should try and set your shutter speed to at least 1/125th of a second or even faster. If the lighting is too dark for the shutter speed and the auto focus fails, you can try the manual focus. As a last resort you can use your camera’s flash.

When you’ve focused on the insect you may want to blur the background to keep the viewer’s attention on the subject. Remember, a greater distance between the insect and the background will result in more of a blurred background.

You may want to shoot the insect from a slight angle from the front. This enables you to see the head and the body while keeping a good balance in the image. However, you might want to experiment with different angles depending on what type of insect it is and the shape of it.

There’s no doubt about it, wildlife photography offers some of the most amazing and exciting images possible. But it can be very dangerous, depending on where you’re shooting and what types of animals you plan on capturing with your camera.

Sometimes we end up rushing wildlife photos and at other times we take too long to capture the moment and it’s passed us by. One of the tricks in getting good shots is to be prepared, but don’t rush things when you have opportunity to take your time.

When taking shots of wildlife, you should try and get close enough to the subject, but remain at a safe distance.

Again, this depends on the animal and the situation. If you’re face to face with a lion in the wilds, you want to be as far away as you can. This means, make sure you have the appropriate lenses on hand to zoom into the creature.

When taking a photo of a bird sitting on a branch, make sure the shot shows the bird and not the whole tree. Zoom in as close as possible and get rid of everything else in the frame unless it’s essential to the photo or tells a story.

Don’t get too carried away though and get too close to the subject. You don’t want it to be crammed into the image. Make sure there’s a little space or the image will appear cramped and squashed. This should be no problem with a zoom lens. Just pull it back a little to leave some room around the animal’s head.

It’s a good idea to set the shutter speed and aperture manually. This allows you to control the depth of field. A small aperture increases the depth of field surrounding the subject and this could result in a distracting background.

If you use a wide aperture the depth of field will narrow, allowing you to concentrate on the animal. Also, you can use a faster shutter speed, enabling you to freeze a moving animal.

Timing is also key. You can always take a bad photo, but the chance to take a great one may only present itself a few times, especially with moving animals. This means – be patient and take a lot of shots. Remember, most of them will be mediocre, but you may suddenly get a superb one. Study the animal if you have time and see how it moves and behaves.
