A tripod seems to be one of the most basic types of photography accessories since it’s basically a stand that’s used to keep your camera steady. However, there are a few details you should be looking at before buying one as they are all different.

Tripods were more common in the days of film photography, but they’re still very helpful in the digital age even though many cameras and lenses come with image stabilizers. There are quite a lot of options when it comes to selecting a tripod. That’s because they come in a variety of weights, sizes, and shapes. They also come with a variety of options and accessories.

The tripod’s weight needs to be considered since you’ll be carrying it around with you. If you can find a model that meets all of your needs and there are options in its weight you might want to consider a lighter one.

However, the tripod will have to be able to handle the weight of your digital camera and lenses. If you’re just using a compact camera for your photos then you shouldn’t have any problem with a light model.

But if you’re using big lenses, a flash unit and an SLR then you need to make sure it can handle the weight and keep everything steady.

But just because a tripod is pretty heavy it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s stable. The only real way to test it for stability is to place your camera and accessories on it before buying. This means you’ll probably have to take that gear with you when you visit the camera shop.

Make sure you extend the legs fully on the tripods that you’re trying out and then see how steady they are with your camera equipment on them. The leg locks of a tripod are important and you should test them by placing a bit of pressure on the unit to see how good they hold. The locks should also be adjustable and easy to use.

The number of leg sections may also influence you . Models with two sections are faster and easier to set up, but they’re longer in size. Many photographers prefer the three-section models as they feel they’re sturdier. These tripods take a little longer to extend though and have more locks, but they are shorter in length. You should take the height (length) of the unit into consideration. It’s a lot more comfortable to take your photos if you don’t have to bend down too far to see through your camera.

You don’t want the tripod to be too short, but if it’s too long it could be more awkward to carry, as lot of it will depend on your height and how you plan to use the tripod. Just make sure that the unit is steady when it’s fully extended.

The head of a tripod will be either a pan-and-tilt type or a ball and socket. Many people feel the ball and socket types are a lot smoother and more flexible. However, a pan-and-tilt head is generally less expensive and locks into place more securely.

However, the good news is that you can purchase the head and the tripod unit separately as well as together in a package. This means you can always buy a head to replace an existing one. It’s a good idea to test the head’s motion before buying it.

Many people wonder if a lens hood is really necessary when taking photographs. While it may not always be necessary to use, it’s a good piece of camera equipment to have. Since the objective of the hood is to block out light.

Most hoods on prime lenses, those lenses that are non-zooming and have a fixed focal length, basically look like a tube with one end usually being larger than the other. Hoods for zoom lenses come with a curved opening at one of the ends. This will allow for a wider field of view at smaller focal lengths and will try to block the majority of light when the focal length is longer.

The lens hood helps block out the light that comes into the lens and creates flare when it reaches the outer elements of the lens at the wrong angle.

This light isn’t needed to take the photo and doesn’t need to reach the camera’s sensor. The light can actually create spots what are shaped like the aperture of the lens.

Lens flare can also be the result of light entering the lens directly, but this is hard to block out. The hood will at least block out light and flare that comes in from an angle.

On lenses with fixed focal lengths, the lens hood is basically solid and is coated on the inside, which blocks out as much light as possible. The felt coating will help cut down on the reflected light that comes from the plastic hood.

However, lens hoods for zoom lenses will let the light in sooner than fixed lens hoods due to the curve at the end of the hood.

Basically, a lens hood won’t cut down on the glare when the light source or the sun is actually in the image. But it can reduce the light that’s created by reflecting off of nearby objects such as white walls, windows, and water, etc. This means the hood should be used whenever you have any unwanted light reflecting into your image.

However, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t have a lens hood or have forgotten to pack it. If you don’t have a hood with you, it’s possible to block out the light by simply using your hand or a magazine or any other type of object to shade the lens from the main source of light.

But if you do this, make sure you don’t get the object in your image. This method won’t really be able to block out the reflected light, but it will be able to keep the glare out of the photo from the main source of light.

In addition, many photographers will keep the lens hood attached to their digital cameras as a way to protect their lenses from bumps, accidental scratches, water, sand, and fingerprints etc. This is because it’s a lot less expensive to replace a lens hood than it is a lens.

Do You Need a Zoom Lens for General Photography?

When it comes to deciding if you should use a zoom lens or the camera’s prime lens there are a few things you should consider.

The best quality lenses are generally prime lenses because they are optimized for one focal length. These lenses are usually faster because they enable you to use a larger maximum aperture setting, which translates into a smaller f-stop.

The larger aperture lets in more light, which means the lens is a better option in low-light conditions. The smaller f-stop also lets you minimize the depth of field in your photos.

Smaller prime or standard lenses are also more compact and lighter, making them easy to carry around and making the camera a bit easier to handle.

Modern-day zoom lenses are also designed to achieve excellent optical performance. With a zoom lens, you don’t have to carry around several lenses of different sizes with you.

You might want to consider a model that ranges from a focal length of about 17 mm to 125 mm.

These are quite versatile and make for a decent walking around lens as they are designed to cover most photographic situations, such as telephoto and wide-angle shots.

A zoom lens offers more flexibility as it offers a wider variety of settings. This lets you fill the photo frame with your image, allowing you to get everything in it without the need for cropping.

If you’re photographing sports or other types of events you may not be able to get close enough to the action. A zoom lens will help you solve this problem by bringing the action to you.

The lens offers quick focal-length changes which could be needed. It also means you don’t have to change standard lenses in different situations. The less you change your lens, the less chance there is of dust entering the camera and settling on the sensor.

Zoom lenses are bulkier and heavier and they can also cost a pretty penny, especially for a fast one such as an f2.8 model.

The best thing to do before deciding on the right lens is to figure out if you’re going to be using the camera for general types of photos or for specialty shots such as sports or photojournalism.

If you’re interested in everyday general photography then a prime or standard lens should suit you fine.

If you want to achieve some interesting, dramatic effects in your images without doing it on a software editing program, you should consider using filters. Real filters often give you a look and feel that can’t be matched by a computer program.

One of the most valuable filters is the polarizer as it can produce see-through waters and vivid skies. If you’re going to use auto focus, then a circular polarizer is the best as it won’t interfere with the auto focus system.

Light that’s reflected from most surfaces, other than metal, is absorbed and this produces a darkening effect on the sky as well as a see-through effect on water and glass.

Gradient filters are popular for creative photography. You can get them in a variety of colors and you can stack them. The filters can be used with the color up in the filter holder and the down. You can produce warm grounds and vivid skies by using a dark to medium blue and keep the color up when it’s in the holder.

The ground can be produced with a brown filter with the color down. A center spot filter can be used to produce a special effect that radiates outwards from the centre.

Diffusers are common as they’re used to soften your images. They can also blur images and diminish the effects produced by other filters. They are ideal for creating dreamy effects on portraits.

You can also create special effects in your photos by using things such as colored Vaseline, pre-cut frames, zoom effects, and coloring-in plastic wrapping paper with a magic marker or felt pen.

You can create optical effects by distorting plastic or glass produce repeated and/or multiple elements in the images.

The experimenting you can do with filters and home-made devices in photography is basically endless. It’s a good idea to write down what type of filter or device you used when experimenting with your photos so you’ll know how to recreate the effect again.

The world has changed quite a lot over the past few decades and unfortunately it hasn’t always been for the better. Security has been tightened all over the globe and you’ll often be faced with the task of having to prove your identity.

This is usually done by producing official documents such as passports, visas, driver’s licenses and citizenship cards etc.

Most people have these types of documents, but they find that they sometimes expire at the most inopportune times.

This means they have to be renewed and new photographs are needed, usually requiring a trip down to a local government office or official photographer.

However, you can save some time and inconvenience these days by taking your own photos that can be used for many types of official documents and identity cards.

This comes in the form of something known as a digital passport system, which is designed for taking and producing the official photos that you need for a variety of documents.

Some of these systems are able to transmit images from a digital camera straight to a printer without the need for any type of wired connection. Most digital passport systems will offer both color and black and white printing options and they can send the images to as many as three different printers.

This enables you to print the photographs off almost instantly. You’ll also be able to take other photos while the previous images are being printed.

You can store the photos in the memory of the digital camera as well as on other types of digital storage mediums.

Most digital passport systems will come with a camera, printer, some type of photo-editing software program and various other accessories. They also include an assortment of templates to make sure that your passport photos etc. are the official size.

Let’s face it, when it comes to finances many people are on different playing levels. Not everybody can afford the newest in digital cameras, lenses, and accessories. However, there are options available to you if you have a special occasion you’d like to photograph, but don’t have the funds to buy the photography equipment needed.

You may possibly have the money to purchase the newest gadgets, but since you’re only planning to use them just once it doesn’t really make sense to lay out a lot of cash for a one-time venture.

Borrowing the gear from a friend is an option, but if that’s not an option you might want to consider renting what you need.

For instance, certain photography ventures call for specific lenses. You might find you need a fisheye lens, a wide-angle or a zoom for some reason and you don’t have one.

Let’s imagine your little nephew is playing in the championship football game and you want to capture it on camera. You know a zoom lens is the only way to do it justice.

Well, instead of buying a new or used one you might be better off renting one for the occasion. There are many camera shops that rent out lenses and other equipment on a daily basis. You’ll also find there are quite a few outlets on the Internet that hire pout camera equipment. Visiting a store in person is always a better option than ordering over the Internet though.

This way you can inspect the items in person and make sure they work and fit your camera. Having the goods shipped to you can sometimes turn into a nightmare if they get lost or damaged during shipping. It’s much easier dealing with somebody in person. If you decide to rent camera equipment make sure you get a lesson on how it works and take good care of it. A rental good may be a good solution to your situation.

If you’re heading out on a holiday or some other once-in-a-lifetime event that you plan on taking photographs at, you need to make sure your digital camera is in proper working order before you go. Many people pack for a trip and just assume that their camera’s ready for action. However, once they get to their destination they may be in for a rude awakening.

You should always test your camera before going away to make sure you don’t get stuck in a situation where you aren’t able to take photos.

You should also make a camera checklist before you go so you don’t leave anything important behind.

Here are some of the things you might want to add to the checklist:

Make sure you have a camera bag that protects the camera well

Take along enough memory cards for the tip or occasion

Take along fresh batteries as well as at least one spare set

If the batteries are rechargeable don’t forget to take a battery charger

Pack the lenses that you’ll be needing such as wide-angle and telephoto lenses to zoom in and out

Take along a cleaning kit for the camera and lenses

Make sure you have the owner’s manual for the camera in case you have problems with it

You may also want to pack a disposable camera as an emergency backup and/or for beach shots

Take a notepad so you can keep track of where the photos were taken and who’s who in them

You should clean your camera regularly and always take good care of it to ensure it’s always in proper working order and can supply you with crisp, clear images. Cleaning a lens with your shirt isn’t good enough as you could actually end up scratching it by grinding dirt or sand into it. Make sure you use the proper cleaning tools.

Remember, the main part of a lens is made of glass. This glass needs to be as clean as possible if you’re hoping to get sharp images. However, it’s quite hard to keep a lens spotless all of the time, since there are always particles of dust floating around in the air.

You should use a lens-cleaning cloth as well as some type of cleaning fluid. Be sure to follow the instructions and don’t use too much fluid. Put the fluid on the cloth and clean the lens by wiping the cloth on it gently in a circular motion.

You won’t have a problem finding a cleaning kit for a digital camera in most camera shops. The fluid is generally alcohol-based and it’s ideal for removing dust, fingerprints, smudges, etc.

You should also keep your filters clean. Other helpful cleaning tools include a brush with an air capsule, and cotton buds. The air capsule can blow off the dust and cotton buds allow you to get the edges of the lens.

When it comes to digital photography, it always comes to the right lenses. Choosing the lenses is perhaps the most important process of a photographer’s work. Therefore, here are few tips how to choose the right lenses, which is the key to a better composition of your pictures. At first, define what kind of image you are going to take.

If it is a personal photography, then choose the 4×5 lenses, because of their near-far effect. In case you are going to shoot a portrait, then use super wide angle lenses like the 75 mm ones. You can also make a combination of those two types of lenses, in case you want to achieve some wide coverage and sharpness.

The lenses in general can be divided into three groups: wide, normal and telephoto. The specialists advise to choose the wide angle lens for landscape because they make a proper composition, when it comes to landscaping photography. In case you want to shoot only a fraction of certain object, the right choice is the telephoto lens.

By using the telephoto lens, the composition of your image is changing and this way you are focusing the attention to a small detail of the entire view.

The world of digital photography is very advanced as there are so many technological aspects of it that have been improved on over the years. These days it seems like everything is “new and improved” and most people are under the impression that bigger is better.

However, some photographers prefer to go back to the basics. They don’t go all the way back to film photography, but use some of the basic principles of it.

For instance, there are so many different types and sizes of memory cards available and most people go for the ones that have the most memory and can store the highest amount of images.

However, if you’re taking photos of a special occasion or trip, you may want to opt for a smaller memory card. The reason behind this is if you happen to lose it then all of your precious photos are gone for good.

But if you use smaller cards and get in the habit of changing them, just like a film, you won’t lose all of your photos as they’ll be spread out on several memory cards.

Of course another way to make sure you don’t lose your favourite photos is to back them up somehow as soon as possible, either on a disk or the hard drive of your computer.
